Kolkata police saved the life of a 40-year-old man who committed suicide by climbing on a bridge on January 23. Police promised the distressed man a packet of biryani and a job.
The incident caused traffic chaos on one of the city's busiest streets for 30 minutes, according to police officers at Karaya station.
This person took this extreme action due to emotional distress due to separation from his wife and financial hardship due to business losses.
“Around 2:30 pm, he was taking his eldest daughter to Science City on his two-wheeler. He suddenly stopped near a bridge and said that his mobile phone had fallen somewhere on the road and he was trying to find it. “Leaving her on the road, he climbed onto the bridge and threatened to jump off,” the officer said.
Police from nearby police stations and personnel from Kolkata Police Disaster Management Group (DMG) and fire department soon reached the spot and started talking to him. After the man offered him biryani and an offer of employment, he reportedly agreed to come down.
“We spoke to his daughter to understand the problem and accordingly planned a conversation to persuade him to give in. And finally, after we made an offer, he He agreed to come down,” the officer said.
Police fear that if the man had slipped off the bridge, he could have hit a utility pole or fallen onto the railroad tracks below. He could have been seriously injured.
