This comes after the Food Standards Agency issued an official warning about the risk of food poisoning linked to eggs in Poland following a rise in salmonella cases. Version 8 of the British Lion Code of Conduct, published in 2023, aims to ensure that the scheme remains the most comprehensive egg food safety assurance scheme in the world.
Gary Ford, chief executive of the British Egg Industry Council, said: “Consumers can have complete confidence in eggs that feature the British lion on the shell and packaging.” With imported eggs under FSA oversight to ensure the safety of imported eggs, it's vital that retailers and the food service industry look to British Lion to ensure they can provide their customers with the highest quality eggs. ”
Claiming the food safety aspects of eggs
To highlight the importance of retailers and food services sourcing British Lion eggs, food safety expert Stirling Crewe will continue to act as an ambassador championing the food safety aspects of eggs. This area will also be targeted by professional chefs sharing advice and innovative recipes.
Pregnant weaning mothers and their parents are advised by the FSA that they can trust British Lion eggs and include British Lion runny eggs in their diets and babies. Registered dietitian Dr. Carrie Luxton emphasizes the nutritional importance of eggs to this audience.
Additionally, British Lion 'Pride', social influencers with over 2 million followers in total, will be creating and sharing content throughout the year. The campaign will launch the @egg_recipes TikTok channel, unlocking access to 29 million monthly users in the UK, 42% of whom are parents. This is complemented by the @egg_recipes Instagram account, whose followers increased by 18% during 2023 to reach 88,000 followers.
