Young people fly more often than older people
Young people tend to engage in less environmentally friendly behaviors, such as traveling more by plane. In 2023, 61% of 18-24 year olds said they traveled by air in the past 12 months. People between the ages of 25 and 34 also flew relatively frequently. Approximately 45% of people aged 35 to 54 said they had traveled by air in the past 12 months. The frequency of air travel decreased with age, decreasing by 14% for those aged 75 and over. They often flew for vacations and city trips. Approximately 20% of young people have holidayed outside Europe in the past 12 months. Among people aged 75 and over, this rate was 4%.

One in five young people who travel by air experience embarrassment on a plane
22% of 18-24 year olds who occasionally fly say they feel guilty about flying because of their impact on the climate. About half of this group said they did not feel guilty. Older people find it easier to reduce or avoid air travel during the holidays
More than 30 percent of 18-24 year olds who occasionally take a plane holiday are definitely willing to cut down on their air travel because of the weather. The numbers are similar for those aged 25 to 64, but around half of those over 65 are willing to reduce their holiday travel by air. Fewer people are willing to give up on air vacation travel altogether. Six per cent of people aged 18 to 24 said they definitely planned to do so, compared to 24 per cent of people aged 75 and over.
