LCA warns consumers that the hamster industry is similar to the puppy mill industry.
Los Angeles, March 26, 2024 /CNW/ – As a result of a thorough undercover investigation, Last chance for animals LCA has launched a campaign calling on PetSmart, Petland and Petco to stop selling hamsters and other small animals.
The investigation revealed animal suffering in commercial small animal breeding factories that breed and sell tens of thousands of hamsters each year. Breeding factories, like puppy mills, expose hamsters to unimaginable horrors. Hamsters produced in these types of factories can end up in pet stores like Petco, PetSmart, and Petland.
Exclusive footage obtained during the LCA investigation shows:
-
Hamsters are kept in small, overcrowded, and dirty cages with minimal burrowing shavings.
-
Hamsters routinely show signs of extreme emotional distress and wander around in their cages.
-
Illness, injury, overpopulation, and “ugly” hamsters are killed.
Hamsters are delicate and intelligent animals that require complex care. They are commonly purchased as “starter pets” for children. The hamster and small animal factory industry exists to supply large quantities of animals for sale to the public.
“We hope our research sheds light on this issue and sparks a conversation about the commercial small animal industry,” said LCA Founder and Chairman. chris derose. “We urge PetSmart, Petland, and Petco to stop selling hamsters and other small animals. Remember to 'Adopt Don't Shop' when it comes to animals.”
