SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls Animal Control is currently trying to identify a Great Dane that was bitten while jogging on Grange Street last week.
The man who was walking his dog on a leash did indeed pull the dog to the side, but the dog bit the jogger's arm as he passed by.
Authorities said the man with the dog was not providing any information at the time of the bite.
Animal control is reporting an increase in dog bites as the weather gets warmer.
Animal Control said responsible pet ownership is important.
Parker, a mini Goldendoodle, likes to burn off some energy at the dog park.
“He can run. He really likes to run,” Parker's owner Ryan Welsh said.
Wales says the dogs are on leashes when outside the fenced area.
“You know it not only keeps him safe, but it keeps other people safe,” Wales said.
Although Wales says Parker has never bitten anyone, the city has received hundreds of reports of dog bites a year in recent years.
Last year, 590 dog bites were reported to Sioux Falls Animal Control.
There have been 139 reports so far this year.
“Animal owners and caregivers who are responsible for a pet bite have a responsibility to report the bite immediately and provide care to the injured person,” said Sioux Falls Animal Control Supervisor Patty Beckman. said.
Anyone with a dog should also give the injured person their name and address.
It's a good reminder to make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations.
“It's only fair for pets to keep themselves healthy and keep others safe,” Welsh said.
Beckman says reporting that your pet has bitten someone does not mean it should be euthanized.
Animal Control is requesting a report of the bite so they can verify rabies vaccinations and arrange for a 10-day quarantine.
