This spring, with the 2024 travel season in full swing, I spoke with the Spanish Tourism Board in New York about the current state of Spanish travel, including new trends and unique elements of the Spanish travel experience.

Scott Hartbeck (SH): Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world, but which cities and regions are gaining in popularity or trends for the 2024 travel season? Is there one?
Spanish Tourism Office in New York (TOSNY): In 2023, Spain will achieve a historic milestone, setting a record with more than 3.8 million arrivals from the United States alone, recording a notable increase of 17% compared to 2019, and increasing tourism spending. also increased by 36%. The forecast for 2024 is promising, with the number of arrivals from the United States estimated to exceed her 4 million. This surge reflects Spain's enduring appeal as a world-class travel destination.
In 2024, cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Tenerife are expected to continue to rise in popularity. Madrid and Barcelona have direct flights from the United States all year round, while Malaga, Palma and Tenerife have direct flights from New York in the summer.
Additionally, cities such as San Sebastian, Seville, and Valencia are on the rise among tourists. There is also growing interest in regions such as Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque Country, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, each boasting a unique cultural heritage, natural beauty and distinct identity, making them ideal for experiencing authentic Spain. It has become an ideal destination.
SH: Travelers in Spain can stay in paradors, which are converted historical buildings such as castles, monasteries, and palaces. It's a very unique concept, but I feel like it's less well known than it should be. Can you tell us a little more about Parador and what travel advisors and travelers should know about Parador?

Additionally, the Canary Islands are well known as the “Lucky Islands”, which accurately describes their mild climate throughout the year, making them ideal for those looking for sunny days and outdoor adventures in stunning landscapes. It has become an ideal destination. There is something for every traveler to enjoy during winter in Spain.
SH: Finally, what do you think we should know about Spain in 2024 and beyond?
Tony: In 2024 and beyond, Spain will continue to innovate and evolve as a premier travel destination. We are committed to sustainability, cultural preservation, and providing unforgettable experiences to travelers from all over the world.
2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eduardo Chillida, a sculptor especially famous in San Sebastian. Valencia's focus on sustainability has earned it the title of 'European Green Capital 2024'. Catalonia stands out as a premier gastronomic destination with the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain, boasting a total of 54 Michelin-starred restaurants this year. Moreover, Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region in northern Spain, has been awarded the title of “Gastronomic Capital of Spain 2024'', promising an exceptional dining experience.

Celebrating Eduardo Chillida's 100th birthday
Sculptor Eduardo Chillida was one of Spain's most important artists of the 20th century, and Spain is celebrating his 100th birthday this year with a number of fun events taking place this year. In 2024, celebrate the talent of Basque sculptors with everything from concerts and exhibitions to audiovisual exhibitions and educational projects.
Among the highlights is the exhibition “Eduardo Chillida: Architecture of the Universe”, which will be held at the Casa de Cultura in Avilés and will fully present his work. The showcases “Chillida and Balenciaga: Folding Forms'' and “Chillida – Ortega Muñoz'' will be held at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum in Getaria and the Bilbao Museum, respectively.
There will also be a classical symphony composed in heartfelt homage to the sculptor's achievements called Chillida Elogios, which will be performed in his homeland of the Basque Country.

Oviedo is the vibrant capital of the Asturias region (located in northern Spain) and is set to rise to prominence as a gastronomic hotspot as Spain's Gastronomic Capital in 2024. Flamenco Museum takes center stage
Located in the sensational Andalusia region of southern Spain, Jerez de la Frontera will unveil its long-awaited cultural attraction, the Andalusian Flamenco Museum, in 2024. Jerez has long been considered one of the birthplaces of flamenco, and this museum delves deep into the storied heritage of the city and its music.
America's Cup takes to the water
Barcelona will be the first and only city to host the World Cup (1982), the Olympic Games (1992) and the America's Cup, the world's premier sailing races held from August to October. The 2024 America's Cup will introduce two of his ground-breaking additions: the Women's America's Cup and the Youth America's Cup. The Port of Barcelona will be busy throughout the tournament.
