SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Resolutions related to baseball, softball and soccer fields all received support at Monday's Sioux City City Council meeting.
During the public hearing regarding the lease of Luger Field to Western Iowa Technological University (WITCC), University officials as well as the Interstate Soccer Club attended the Board of Trustees meeting. The proposed lease begins Monday, Feb. 5, and runs through the end of 2028, according to city documents.
The agreement grants WITCC the right to operate and maintain the arena in a smoke-free manner and to operate concession buildings for the sale of various products. The university will be responsible for scheduling practices, league games and tournaments.
“Given the children we serve and the impact they have on our communities, it is in everyone's best interest to maintain our lease,” said Interstate Soccer Club President Jenny Amundson. It will happen,” he said.
“We want to partner with everyone in the community and will do our best to work with all organizations in the city,” said WITCC Vice President of Finance Troy Jasman. “But we have great plans to capitalize on that area.”
City Council members approved the lease 5-0. Mayor Bob Scott spoke about the resolution after the meeting.
“More importantly, we want kids to use it,” Scott said. “That's why we have so many parks because we hope there are activities for them to enjoy. But the other side of the coin is, [WITCC] Our proposition was that this community needs to support the success of our higher education institutions, and this was one way we could do that. ”
Council members also voted 5-0 on three other leases. One is from the Donner Park Urban Renewal Area to Floyd Slowpitch Softball. The second is the Riverside Recreation Sports Complex (from Miracle Field to Miracle League). The third area is the combined Floyd River Urban Redevelopment Area and Headed Little League.
