NBA Rumors: Klay Thompson is one of the big names set to become a free agent this summer, but the overwhelming expectation is that he re-signs with the Golden State Warriors.
The Golden State Warriors were one of the most disappointing teams this season. But for now, there is always hope for this team, as their core is still intact. Heading into the offseason, the Warriors need to address concerns centered around their recent inconsistency. One of their goals during the season was to bench veteran All-Star guard Klay Thompson. While it has helped some, it's not an easy pill to swallow for Thompson, leading to further concerns as he prepares to hit the free agency market this summer.
Ideally, Thompson would like to get another big contract, perhaps one that's close to the maximum amount. If he wants, that contract will likely come from the Warriors. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. Thompson has struggled this season, and it hasn't exactly been his best year. His play this season will likely impact the free agent market.
Thompson will likely have options during the offseason, but he may have to sign a short-term deal if he wants to land in a desirable situation. And depending on how his market develops, that might not be a terrible idea. One option being whispered about is Thompson returning to the Warriors on a non-max contract.
According to a recent report from ESPN, there appears to be interest on both sides for a short-term deal during the offseason. That has to be one of the most likely scenarios for Thompson at this point.
The question is how much he is willing to sacrifice at this point in his career to be in a place he is comfortable with and perhaps where he wants to end his career. That's certainly the question that will ultimately determine how this offseason goes for both the Warriors and Thompson.
In the vacuum, it would make the most sense for both sides for Thompson to sign a short-term deal and perhaps accept a role on the bench. Especially if the Warriors can make additional moves in addition to re-signing Thompson.
But that's a big “what if”. The Warriors are entering the offseason and are under tremendous pressure to rebuild around Curry. They will have to make some difficult decisions in the coming months, with Thompson's future at the forefront of those issues.
