Virgin Australia has announced plans to become the first Australian airline to allow pets on board.
The plan still requires regulatory approval and is expected to begin within 12 months.
In 2021, Virgin Australia conducted a social media survey via Facebook in which 85% of respondents voted in favor of the airline starting allowing pets on board.
The company said a recent survey of Australian pet owners found that nearly 70% said they would travel with their pets on board, and 57% would fly more regularly if the service was offered. He reportedly replied that he would ride it.
In North America, nearly all major airlines, including United Airlines and Air Canada, allow pets on domestic flights, subject to certain regulations.
Virgin Australia said the proposed pet-friendly service would have the following parameters and limitations:
- This service is limited to small dogs and cats on certain domestic flights.
- Limited designated rows assigned as “pet zones”
- Pets are not allowed to roam freely or sit on your lap.
- Pets must also be transported in a Virgin Australia approved pet carrier under the seat in front of their owner for the duration of the flight.
Virgin Australia CEO Jane Hrdlicka said in a statement: “Our love of animals has always been in Virgin Australia's DNA and we are thrilled to be launching Australia's first ever pet on board. “
“Overwhelmingly, our customers have told us they want to travel with their pets and we are currently on a journey to make that a reality. This is common overseas and has been proven to work. ” Hrdlicka continued.
Hrdlicka added: “Almost 70% of Australian households own a pet, so this announcement is hugely important for large parts of the country. “This will truly be a whole new economy for pet travel in Australia.”
