Although the clinic specializes in reactivity, you do not need a reactive pet or a referral to come.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Our furry friends can be more reactive in certain situations and environments, like the veterinarian's office.
It can cause a violent reaction from your pet.
A new clinic in Grand Rapids specializes in treating reactive dogs and cats.
Located on Plainfield Avenue is the Reactive Referral Center.
Dr. Tracy Pawkett, a veterinarian with more than 25 years of experience, opened the clinic in December.
“We saw a need to help dogs and cats with reactivity issues, not just their owners, both at home and, of course, in the veterinary setting,” Pawkett said.
The staff here understand body language and are trained to care for animals with heightened fear, anxiety, or stress.
“Many pets, especially cats, are not cared for because they are thought to be 'bad' or difficult to handle. And it's all out of fear. They're just misunderstood,” Pawkett says. he said.
Patients are typically treated one at a time in a spacious lobby area.
Treats such as cheese and whipped cream are used to keep your furry friend happy.
“It's highly individualized, choreographed care. So I know their likes and dislikes before they come here, and I know as much about their medical health as their mental health. We know. So we'll look at every part of it,” Pawkett said.
The clinic offers health care including vaccines, blood tests, and X-rays.
Services for laser therapy, acupuncture and other chiropractic needs will be offered in May.
“We found that pain is strongly tied to behavior and, of course, quality of life. Plus, pets aren't very good at letting us know when they're hurting.” said Porket.
Although the clinic specializes in reactivity, you do not need a reactive pet or a referral to come.
“Puppies and kittens are very welcome because we want to meet them when they're babies. So when we start them, you know, often we're setting them up for success. ” said Mr. Pawket.
Staff said the Reactive Referral Center's mission is to create a safe place for all pets and their families.
Surgical and dental services will begin this summer, with an open house scheduled for June 22nd.
