ROSWELL, N.M. – The city of Roswell is now home to UNM's Truman Health Services Clinic. People in southeastern New Mexico will have access to HIV and sexual health care.
The facility will provide the primary care the community has needed for some time, as well as HIV and sexually transmitted disease testing and prevention.
According to a recent study using public data, HIV infection rates in Chaves County alone have increased by 52% over the past 16 years.
Dr. Michelle Iandiolo, medical director of UNM Truman Health Services, said there are disparities in sexually transmitted disease and HIV rates in the state.
“The southeastern part of the state, like other regions with less access to health care and perhaps prevention knowledge and resources, is seeing an increase in the number of sexually transmitted infections and HIV infections. “What we want to do is for people to understand their condition and know how to get preventive services and treatment,” Landiolo said.
Before this new facility was built, Roswell had a mobile unit that came in once a month to provide HIV treatment.
The goal is to allow people to go to a facility and get the help they need without having to drive far. All new Mexicans should have access to health care, regardless of their zip code.
“Our geographically very large state has a low population density, and honestly, our biggest challenge here in New Mexico is providing care for all New Mexicans. Because they can’t come,” Interim CEO and President Dr. Gary Meredy said. of UNM Medical Group. “This is a step in the right direction with the combination of our telemedicine center and this new clinic, and we're really looking forward to expanding throughout Roswell to provide this much-needed care.” can.”
