The series begins with ordinances related to animals, specifically dogs and cats. The number of dog and cat adoptions has increased significantly during the coronavirus pandemic. According to a report published by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), more than 23 million households in the United States adopted pets during this period.
This adoption rate is not surprising given that many people have been working from home during the pandemic and have had time to care for new additions.
Here are some frequently asked questions about the village's pet ordinance. eNews Park Forest consulted with Park He Forest Police Deputy Chief John Decaux to ensure accuracy.
How many pets per household?
According to current ordinances, Park Forest residents may not own or keep more than three dogs and cats in any residential unit.
What are the rules regarding dog protection?
The Park Forest Ordinance clearly states that residents may not allow dogs to roam freely within the village. Dogs must be restrained with a fence or a leash. Additionally, no dog shall be permitted on a leash to enter any adjoining property or within 5 feet of any street, parkway, or sidewalk. Owners who live in apartment complexes must secure their dogs with a chain or leash no longer than 6 feet in length.
Where in the village are dogs and cats prohibited?
Dogs and cats are not allowed in commercial areas, business areas, restaurants or food markets, including adjacent parking lots. It is okay to leave your dog or cat in your car in a parking lot where there is proper ventilation.
These restrictions do not include guide dogs or assistance dogs accompanying blind, deaf, or physically disabled individuals.

A police officer or social services representative will visit your home and explain the ordinance. In most cases, responding officers do not remove the animal, Deputy Chief Dekow said. Does the village provide residents with an area where their dogs can run and play?
