Virginia Tech continued to play well in the final quarter, making five of eight shot attempts in the first five minutes. At the media timeout, the Tar Heels were down 17 points. With just under three minutes remaining, Usby was ejected for a foul.

The Tar Heels scored 15 points in the fourth, but the effort proved too late.
