Washington | January 31, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Rockefeller Foundation announced a new partnership to accelerate the implementation of “Food is Medicine” in the health care system. Through this partnership, HHS and the Rockefeller Foundation will engage a broader public audience in understanding nutrition, advance collective understanding of Food is Medicine interventions and their impact, and scale successful Food Is Medicine programs. We aim to improve health outcomes and health equity by exploring strategies to scale up health outcomes and health equity. More Americans are eligible.

Although Food is Medicine programs are widely recognized as powerful interventions, only a small proportion of people can benefit from them. Through public-private partnerships, HHS and the Rockefeller Foundation exchange information and ideas to:
- Advance and leverage research designs and findings through knowledge to generate conclusive evidence on clinical health outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and optimal program design.
- Engage a broader public audience about the meaning and value of FIM interventions and resources.
- Support the implementation of 'Food is Medicine' by identifying opportunities and barriers to support further uptake and expansion.
- Ensure Food is Medicine supports diverse individuals and communities with a focus on health equity.

Today, the Rockefeller Foundation also announced an increase to more than $100 million in funding to advance the Food is Medicine program. This includes up to $51 million to the American Heart Association to advance understanding of the health and economic outcomes of Food is Medicine. Programs aimed at diverse populations across the United States.
This partnership with HHS is also the second time the Rockefeller Foundation has worked with the U.S. government to expand the nation's “Food is Medicine” program. In April 2023, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and philanthropic organizations will form a new collaboration to support two prescription generation pilot projects and related research pilot programs in the VA health systems in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Houston, Texas. announced their relationship.
