Are you planning to travel with your pet?
Because each airline has its own policies, airports across New York advise pet owners to check with each airline to ensure all guidelines are being followed. However, the airport itself has its own rules and regulations.
Here's what you need to know about the different pet policies at some airports across the state.
Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport
Monroe County Public Affairs Deputy Director Meghan McDermott said pets are allowed inside the airport if they are traveling with their owners, but they should not be brought into the terminal to greet arriving passengers. .
Designated pet rescue areas are located outside the airport and in each concourse.
JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark Airport
New York/New Jersey airports, including John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark, follow U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines.
“No person shall enter any port control area, public landing area, public ramp and apron area, public passenger ramp and apron area, or public cargo ramp and apron area of New York and New Jersey with an animal, other than an animal.'' a service animal…or an animal properly confined for transportation,” Port Authority representatives said in a written statement.
Animals may be leashed in designated pet rescue areas, but elsewhere in the terminal animals must be placed on an Air Transport approved carrier.
Syracuse Hancock International Airport
According to officials at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, animals are not allowed inside the airport unless they are being transported by air, with the exception of service animals or animals used for law enforcement purposes. In that case, those animals should be leashed or crated.
The airport has several outdoor pet rescue rooms and one inside Terminal A.
