Rio Tinto Group announced that a number of employees heading to its Diavik diamond mine were killed in a plane crash near Fort Smith, N.V.
The miners said in a statement today that they are working closely with authorities to determine exactly what happened. The company did not disclose the number of deaths.
The British Aerospace Jetstream jet crashed about 740 kilometers south of Yellowknife, near the Alberta border, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
The plane took off from the Fort Smith airport, lost contact and crashed near the banks of the frigid Slave River.
There was no immediate word on how many people were on the plane, but the airline's website says this type of plane can carry 19 passengers.
Rio operated Diavik, Canada's largest diamond mine, since it began production in 2003 until taking full control of the asset in 2021.
