(CNN) — A New Orleans restaurant with a modern Senegalese tasting menu and an Ethiopian-born chef who studied psychology before turning to a culinary career have been named finalists for a coveted James Beard Award. Includes restaurant and chef.
Finalists for the Restaurant and Chef Awards were announced Wednesday in Washington, D.C. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
In the Emerging Chef category, Faryal Abdullahi, executive chef of New York's Hub & Mar, is one of the five finalists. After earning a degree in psychology, Abdullahi chose a new path, going to the Culinary Institute of America and Noma in Copenhagen, and eventually to chef Marcus Samuelsson's seafood-focused Hav & Mar. I joined the company.
Mr. Abdullahi is joined in this category by another chef who has taken a winding path to a culinary career. Masako Morishita moved to Washington, D.C. to become a cheerleader for the Washington Commanders. Now, an up-and-coming chef is serving Japanese home cooking to Perry's diners.
In the Best New Restaurant category, finalist Dakar NOLA offers a seasonal seven-course pescatarian menu that blends New Orleans ingredients with flavors drawn from Chef Serigne Mbaye's West African roots.
This year's Outstanding Chef finalists include Sarah Minnick of Lovely's Fifty Fifty in Portland, Oregon, and Dean Neff of Seabird in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Two finalists in the Outstanding Restaurant category are from Texas: Convenience West, a West Texas barbecue joint in Marfa, and Mixtri in San Antonio, described as a “progressive Mexican restaurant.”
The nonprofit James Beard Foundation was founded more than 30 years ago, shortly after the death of “pioneer foodie” James Beard, “to honor, support, and elevate the people who shaped America's food culture.” Ta.
Beard hosted network television's first gourmet show, “I Love to Eat,” in 1946, and in 1954 was called “the head of American cooking” by the New York Times.
The foundation, which has faced controversy in recent years, introduced new policies and procedures and a new code of ethics in 2022 in the wake of allegations of chef misconduct and lack of diversity.
The first award ceremony was held in 1991.
