Additional important results from representative population-level studies indicate that:
- 8 out of 10 teens don't get enough sleep.
- The typical teen gets an “F” grade for practicing healthy sleep behaviors.
- Teens who have trouble falling or staying asleep two or more nights a week have significantly more symptoms of depression.
- Almost three-quarters of teens say their mental health is negatively affected by sleeping less than usual.
Importantly, these results expand the base of knowledge about the relationship between sleep health and mental health in the American population. NSF Sleep-in in 2023 American public opinion poll highlighted this similar association among U.S. adults in general. As America continues to face a mental health crisis, teens face unique challenges and have unique sleep needs, putting them in a particularly unenviable position.

Annual survey “Sleep in” American public opinion poll It is one of the longest-running records documenting America's perceptions, attitudes, and trends regarding sleep health. The 2024 report examines the results of various sleep health tools, including NSF's Sleep Health Index®, Sleep Satisfaction Tool®, and Best Slept Self® Questionnaire, to assess sleep status in teens, as well as depression symptoms in teens.
