CARLSBAD, Calif. (CNS) – Bonita and Carlsbad county animal shelters are recruiting for adoptions and foster homes to combat overcrowding, it was announced Thursday.
The issue is affecting shelters across the country, especially in dog populations.
“More dogs are coming into our shelters this year than last year, and fewer dogs are being adopted out to shelters or adopted out by owners,” said San Diego County Animal Services Director Kelly Campbell. said. “We don't want to run out of space, so we need the help of the community. Adoption or foster care makes a huge difference to the animals in our care, and fostering or fostering It will be of great benefit to us.”
The county says a variety of factors are contributing to the overcrowding, including tough economic conditions and a lack of housing for many families. Because of this, some people are forced to make the difficult decision of whether or not to give up their beloved dog. Rising food and veterinary costs are also a factor for some families.
Last year, the county Animal Services shelter took in more than 5,700 animals, and more than 5,100 were adopted or returned to their owners.
“Housing and financial hardship were among the top five reasons dogs were voluntarily surrendered to shelters,” the county statement said. The top reasons for surrender were the death of the owner or inability to care for the animal, and having too many dogs in the household.
All dogs admitted to the shelter for 30 days or more will have their adoption fee waived.
According to the county, adoptions are always free if adoption is not currently an option.
“Even a short break of a few days away from the shelter environment can significantly improve a pet's health and welfare,” the statement reads. “Basic care supplies such as food, leashes and bedding are all included as part of the program.”
Pet owners are asked to have their pets spayed or neutered to avoid overpopulation. County Animal Services can help by providing low-cost referrals.
People can also help donate dog food, which the county can pass on to local residents in need.
