The Texas Tech baseball team and Texas State are scheduled to play each other in the Big 12 this weekend, with renewed debate over whether the teams should continue to play each other as non-conference opponents after the Longhorns depart for the SEC. It means that the time has come.
Add Tim Tadlock to the list of people you want to keep the rivalry going with.
“If we can get a schedule (in) Week 4 next year, I think you would sign up for it,” the Tech coach said Thursday. “I think our kids love to play baseball. I think there's a lot of tradition and history in baseball in Texas. When I say that, I mean the state of baseball in Texas. Obviously , including the University of Texas.”
The teams will meet on the Red Raiders' turf on Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. No. 17 Tech (10-2) has won his seventh straight game, and No. 24 Texas (7-5) has lost his fourth straight, both due to strong performances. No. 10 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Texas A&M.
Texas leaves for the SEC at the end of the school year.
“I think Kirby (Hocutt) and Chris Del Conte will have a relationship where they can talk about playing baseball and at least the midweek double,” Tadlock said of the school's athletics. Directors. “But there are also no guarantees.”
Tadlock acknowledged that it “could be difficult” for Tech and UT to collaborate on the baseball field.
“We've been trying to play (Texas) A&M outside of the tournament for 11 years without success, and I think you could be facing the exact same thing,” he said.
Tadlock said he could defend a team leaving the Big 12 not playing Texas Tech in baseball, saying, “If you hit .500 in that league, you can advance to the regional league. They start attacking teams that have a chance of beating them. That could (damage their chances in the NCAA region).”
