The 2024 college baseball season officially began with the fourth edition of the Shriners Children's College Showdown hosted by Kubota in Arlington, Texas. There, six championship-level teams from four conferences are wasting time testing themselves in the new campaign.
Among the standout programs taking over Globe Life Field, home of the recent World Series champion Texas Rangers, are the University of Tennessee and Texas Tech, which will play Friday night at 8 p.m. ET.
The University of Tennessee is coming off an outstanding 2023 season with the Volanches posting a 44-22 record and making it to the Men's College World Series for the second time in three seasons. This feat is even more impressive considering the strength of the Southeastern Conference and the fact that the two teams that ended up competing for the national title (LSU and Florida) are also from the SEC.
LSU ended Tennessee's season, and now, a few months later, Volante will likely play against Texas Tech in Arlington.
This is the third time Tennessee and Texas Tech have met, with each team winning one of the last two meetings. In 2008, Texas Tech had the best record against the Volantes (7-3), and the University of Tennessee returned the favor in 2020 with a 6-2 win as Texas Tech became the nation's No. 1 team.
Texas Tech was making its third appearance in the Shriners Children's College Showdown, finishing the season with a record of 41 wins and 23 losses, but this season it was also one of the 2023 national finalists, Florida. It ended in defeat.
The Red Raiders lost to the Gators 7-1, 6-0 on consecutive days, ending their season at the Gainesville Regional. Texas Tech is seeking his fifth CWS appearance in the past decade, the most recent being his 2019 appearance.

2024 Shriners Children's University Showdown
Heading into the 2024 tournament, the University of Tennessee is ranked No. 8 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll, while Texas Tech is ranked No. 22.
Other teams participating in the Shriners Children's College Showdown are Baylor, Oklahoma, Oregon (which received votes) and Nebraska.
Tennessee will play Oklahoma on Saturday at 8pm ET and Baylor on Sunday at 7:30pm ET.
Texas Tech will play Nebraska on Saturday at 4pm ET and Oregon State on Sunday at 3:30pm ET.
The Shriners event is the first of two exciting weeks of college baseball at Globe Life Field. The Kubota University Baseball Series will follow, with a midweek game (February 20-21), two weekend games (February 23-25), and three weekend games (March 1-3). I will.
After the Shriners Children's University showdown, Texas Tech will remain in town until midweek games, when the Red Raiders will face Texas Tech University at Arlington (Feb. 20) and Oregon State (Feb. 21). Oklahoma State and Abilene Christian will also be added.

Texas Tech University Outstanding Companies
Texas Tech catcher/infielder Kevin Buzzell and first baseman Gavin Kash are among the 55 college baseball players on the 2024 Golden Spikes Award Watch List.
Bazzell is a third-year sophomore and a top-five catcher in all of college baseball.
Kash is a junior and is in his second season with the Red Raiders. Last year, he hit .327 and led the Big 12 in home runs (26) and RBIs (84).

Tennessee Baseball in the Lone Star State
In three visits to Tennessee under coach Tony Vitello, Tennessee has seven wins overall, including 2-1 at the 2022 Shriners Children's College Showdown in Houston. He has a record of 2 losses.
On the big stage at the Pro Stadium, Volanti has nine wins and three losses under Vitello.
Texas Tech University at Globe Life Field
Located just a few hours from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Texas Tech University is a frequent commute from Lubbock.
Unfortunately, the Red Raiders did not perform as well as expected in those visits, posting a 4-9 record in the Texas Rangers' home stadium.
Texas Tech is 1-5 against Shriners Children's College at Globe Life Field, but four of those five losses have come against ranked opponents.
