At Saturday's high school hockey…
• Late momentum led Jeffers to a 6-3 come-from-behind victory over Gladwin at the Cheboygan Showcase. The Jets led 3-1 at the end of the first period. They scored a goal in the second period to close the gap, then scored four points in the third to pull the game away. Britt Heinonen scored twice for the Jets. Cage Osterman had a goal and three assists. Brogan Turner, Cody Turner and Griffin Heinonen also found the net. Jeffers outscored the Flying G's 64-25 with Kasen Helminen making 22 saves.
college hockey
The Michigan Technological University hockey team lost the game, but won the Winter Carnival Trophy on Saturday night. After winning 3-1 against Minnesota State on Friday, the Huskies dropped a 4-2 decision on Saturday. Tyron Bronte and Marcus Pedersen scored for the Huskies. Blake Pietila stopped 12 of 15 shots, and the Mavericks' winning goal came on an empty-netter in the second half. With each team tied for one win and a total of five goals in the series, Tech won the shootout with goals from Logan Pietila, Ryland Mosley and Pedersen to take home the trophy. Jed Pietila was named Most Valuable Player of the series.
The Northern Michigan State hockey team fell to a 3-3 tie against Bemidji State University on Saturday night. The Beavers earned bonus points in the Chuo University Hockey Association standings with the shootout. Grant Slyukinsky, Artyom Shurein and Andre Gantus scored for the Wildcats. NMU outscored Bemidji 29-17, with Beni Harash netting the loss.
college basketball
The Michigan Tech basketball team defeated Parkside on Saturday.
• The girls held off the Rangers 74-68. Isabella Lentz and Kaitlyn Meister each had 17 points, and Emma Anderson came off the bench to contribute a career-best 14 points.
• The boys team jumped out to an early lead and won 74-52. Marcus Tomashek scored 22 points. Dan Gerezger had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Both Northern Michigan University teams swept Purdue Northwest on Saturday.
• The girls had a strong third quarter and won 73-62. Makaylee Kuhn had 25 points.
• The boys team scored the final eight points of the game to defeat the Pride 69-66. Dylan Kuehl scored 22 points and Max Weisbrod added 20 points.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Eagle River Falcons 5-4 in overtime on Saturday.
The Calumet Wolverines had the weekend off.
NHL
The Red Wings overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat the Canucks 4-3 in overtime on Saturday. Lucas Raymond scored an early goal, then Vancouver scored three straight goals. Third-period goals from Daniel Spring and Michael Rasmussen sent overtime, and Jake Wolman scored the game-winning goal. Alex Lyon made 28 saves.
Raymond suffered an illegal check to the head early in the second period and fell to the ice. He missed several shifts but eventually returned to the game. Canucks forward Nikita Zadorov has been suspended for two games.
The Wings visit the Oilers on Tuesday. Coverage begins at 8:45 a.m. on 99.3 The Rift.
NBA
On Saturday, the Pistons lost 112-106 to the Clippers, ending their modest two-game winning streak. Jaden Ivey had 23 points, Cade Cunningham had 22 points and 10 assists, and Jalen Duren had 18 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Lakers on Tuesday night.
