Mr. Taneja is retiring from the Department of Health after approximately 10 years of service.
TARRANT COUNTY, Texas — Tarrant County's top health official resigned Tuesday, according to county officials.
Virinder “Vinny” Taneja did not give a reason for his resignation, which came just days after a 2022 personnel report detailing a “hostile work environment.”
“Effective today, Mr. Veerinder 'Vinny' Taneja has submitted his resignation as Tarrant County Public Health Director,” the county said in a short statement.
Mr. Taneja is retiring from the Department of Health after approximately 10 years of service.
A scathing 2022 report included complaints from 16 current and former workers against Mr Taneja and deputy director Angela Hagee. Employees complained of a “toxic leadership style,” bullying, and that his “behaviors caused anxiety, mental health issues, and PTSD,” the report said.
WFAA has reached out to Teneja and Hagy, but has not yet received a response.
The Department of Public Health oversees community health, vaccine records, restaurant safety standards, respiratory diseases, and more. Taneja has led the charge as Tarrant County faces its greatest public health challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deputy County Commissioner Tom Stallings has been appointed interim chief.
The county announced it would immediately begin the search process for a new public health director.
