The Ducks' bullpen has yet to allow a run, and All-Pac-12 pitchers who were key starters for the Ducks in 2023 are starting the season pitching out of the bullpen. Logan Mercado started 10 games for Oregon State in 2023, but was activated Saturday with a six-out save.
Oregon State has such depth on its pitching front, and much of that will depend on the development of Friday's starter RJ Gordon and Saturday's starter Kevin Setter, but Oregon State, with the No. 4 pick, will have a real chance to win the Pac-12. In their final season.
At times on Saturday, the setter struggled through four innings. But Baylor had no hits for the remaining five innings.
Oregon State remains outside the top 25 in most preseason polls, and the reigning Pac-12 Tournament champions, who advanced to the Super Regional last season, should be in the rankings next week.
Oklahoma reliever Kyson Witherspoon was the star of the night.
Oklahoma State defeated No. 9 Tennessee on Saturday thanks to OU reliever Kyson Witherspoon. The sophomore played in 17 games for Northwest Florida State University in 2023, posting a 3.19 ERA and 72 strikeouts, and he doesn't seem intimidated by the Vols' batting lineup, which features several players ranked in the top 100 of the MLB draft. Ta.
He pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing no runs, throwing a complete game on 77 pitches. He focused on three walks and was effective until the ninth inning.

Prospect Watch: Drew Beam of Tennessee Baseball
Beam was selected as one of the 25th prospects in the 2024 MLB Draft and will make his debut in 2024.
Granted, his pitching wasn't bad at all, pitching 5.2 innings without a walk and showing the control that scouts liked. His walk rate entering the season was 6.7%, and he threw all five pitches.

Sunday's Game of the Day: Texas Tech vs. Oregon State 3:30 p.m.

And Texas Tech is playing two of its toughest games yet.
Oregon hasn't announced a starter yet, but they have a deep staff to choose from. The Ducks could start Turner Sporjaric, who started four games last season, or choose one of three true freshmen, including Cole Stokes, who ranked No. 67 in Perfect Game. right. Oregon considers him a bullpen player, but he could also select Jackson Pace, who has started games before.
Tech is starting Jack Washburn, who missed 2023 with an injury but started nine games and had a 5-2 record with a 3.35 ERA in 2023.
