The Stripteasers, the “babies” who brought burlesque back to Buffalo, are currently celebrating their 20th anniversary. Many other burlesque groups have come onto the scene since I first saw them perform at Roxy's, but it was the Stripteasers that paved the way for many others to follow. That's why they are considered Buffalo's longest-running burlesque troupe. They are also considered the darlings of the industry as they have not only withstood the test of time but have remained on top for 20 years. Now for the long run!
“It all started at the legendary lesbian bar Roxy’s in early 2004,” says Jamie Docter, one of the founding members of the exotic dance troupe who continues to perform today. “It was a place where they established a home for their wry and captivating satire, skits, comedy, music, drag, and every other queer performance art you can think of. Not only did they perform every Thursday, but they also played shows from Tampa to Toronto and many local theaters and venues. Even after Roxy's closed, the Strip Teasers continued to reign supreme. They soon established a new home at Nietzsche's in Allentown, where they still perform every Tuesday night. For many years, they inspired and nurtured Buffalo's growing burlesque scene. And for 20 years. All these years later, the OGs of Buffalo Burlesque remain active year-round, putting on great shows at Pride, Infringement Festival, Halloween, and everything in between.”
Now it's time to celebrate Stripteasers. We are gearing up for a performance at Nietzsche's House on Saturday, April 27th. The burlesque troupe will be accompanied by Irving Clowes, Joe Donahue, Kendall Kelly and Folkfaces. You won't want to miss this highly anticipated event that will usher in the next 10-20 years of strip burlesque in Buffalo.
