INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Sen. Gene Breaux announced Monday that he is resigning after 18 years in the state Legislature, saying he wants to focus on “enjoying the time I have left surrounded by the people I love.”
Mr. Breaux has served in the Indiana State Senate since 2006 and also serves on the Indiana Recycling Market Development Commission and the Medicaid Advisory Committee. Breaux represents District 34, which includes portions of Center, Lawrence, Warren and Washington townships in Marion County.
In a statement released Monday, Sen. Breaux reflected on his nearly two decades as a state senator and talked about some of the highlights of his career. She spoke about efforts to improve mortality rates and access to healthy food for Black infants and mothers in Indiana, while addressing historic poverty, gun violence, and reproductive justice.
The senator did not provide specific information about his health condition.

After a tough battle with my health, it's time to focus on enjoying the time I have left surrounded by my loved ones.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has reached out, to my colleagues and team in the state Legislature, and to the communities I have represented for nearly 20 years. Improving Black infant and maternal mortality rates, increasing access to healthy food in food deserts, protecting Hoosiers from rising utility costs, fighting for reproductive justice, and passing policies that address poverty. And I'm very proud of the work we did together to protect our communities from the elements, including gun violence.
“Your support, love, and trust have fueled my fight and allowed me to do the best job I can on behalf of Senate District 34. I would like to thank my Senate colleagues for their fighting spirit and commitment to the people. I encourage you to keep doing this work with all your heart.'' It's an uphill battle in Senate District 34 and across the state.
“I remain grateful for the trust my community has shown in me, the continued support of my colleagues, and the wonderful family, friends, and allies I have gained during my time in the Senate. Representing has been the highlight of my life and career, and it has filled me with so much joy and purpose. I send you all my eternal love and happiness.”
