SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A suspect in a shooting inside Springfield Science and Technology High School faced a judge early Tuesday morning.
The suspect is not charged with firing a gun during Monday's altercation, but he is charged with assault and battery in connection with a fight inside the Cytec office. Springfield police believe a female student was working with three non-students, and the investigation remains ongoing, but city leaders say Monday's fight did not have a different outcome. expressed his gratitude.
“We know who is responsible and why, and we will work with Superintendent Warwick and the school department to bring appropriate charges,” said Springfield Police Superintendent Claproad.
Just one day after a shooting occurred inside Springfield High School of Science and Technology, we are learning more about what happened inside the school on Monday.
“It was the students inside who called the people outside, and when they entered the school with firearms, we had a very serious incident,” Claproad said.
This serious incident ended in chaos, with a single gunshot fired in the hallway and windows blown out.
Police said one person was hit on the side of the head and suffered a small cut to his cheek, but no serious injuries were reported.
“Springfield Police Department immediately responded to de-escalate the situation,” said Springfield Mayor Sarno. “If that gunman had gone on a rampage inside the school and started shooting people indiscriminately, the situation could have been much worse.”
The gunman remains at large, but the investigation led to the arrest of 22-year-old Josiah Livingston, who is now charged with assault and battery.
The Hartford resident was out on bail on a stolen vehicle charge at the time of his latest arrest, and most recently spent more than a year in prison after being convicted on a firearms charge in 2022.
School safety discussions are at the forefront right now.
“We're not just there to educate students of every creed, color, and background. We're there to keep them safe,” Mayor Sarno said.
“We will continue to investigate this situation and strive to improve safety,” said Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Warwick. “Our primary objective is the safety of our students.”
Mayor Sarno also said a “post-conclusion” review would be conducted in the coming days to learn more about the effectiveness of the safety and security measures already in place.
The investigation continues at this time.
One suspect has been arrested, and police are processing paperwork for a possible second suspect.
