Spin bikes spin at 7 a.m. in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Gianna DeLucia prepares her students for an early morning ride as disco lights and her 2000s music fill the room.
“My favorite part about attending spin class is when there's fun, upbeat music playing,” said Jenna Kulka, a second-year nursing student. “I started going spin because all my friends were going, but I kept going because it was good exercise and I had a lot of fun.”
DeLucia decided she wanted to become a spin instructor at Kent State University after designing and teaching a spin class for a beginner spin course last semester.
“I enjoy the atmosphere I can create in class,” she said. “I love seeing everyone having fun together and it’s great to be able to contribute to that.”
The process of becoming an instructor through college includes earning certification through online courses. Other certifications include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, working with minors, working with bloodborne pathogens, and other trainings sponsored by Recreation and Wellness Services.
While some people choose to become spin instructors for their own personal goals, Delucia's purpose is for her students.
“My goal in every class is for everyone to feel comfortable there,” she said. “I don't want anyone to be scared or nervous. It just creates a positive energy in the class.”
To keep her students motivated and eager to take the next class, Delucia often teaches music-themed classes.
“Some of the themes I've worked on are '90s rock, Queen vehicles, and 2000s throwbacks,” she said. “Most of the time, I'm going to have a playlist full of feel-good songs.”
Spin classes are available Monday through Sunday. times It varies.
