On February 7, 2024, the Vice President and Standard Bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, released his first major speech and vision ahead of the 2024 elections.
Among a number of remarks, he said the government would abolish several important taxes, specifically the vehicle emissions tax, the 15% value-added tax on electricity, and the gambling tax.

However, some people who spoke to Ghanaweb said Bawumia only wanted to use this to garner votes for him in the 2024 elections.
As a result, they demanded that he immediately abolish the tax as his party and government were still in power.
They believe this will help the country.
According to one of them, “I don't think he can abolish those taxes. You know, Bawumia is known for lying…Even before you Google it, Bawumia, You'll find lies there.
“So he thinks Ghanaians are the same simple people we were before. So I think now is the right time to show him the way back. Why did he remain vice president for eight years? But as vice president, the president brought something to the table.'' And you're saying you don't realize what he brought to the table.
“This means that even if you are the vice president, you are not active… An inactive vice president, now you want to be president, it makes no sense.
“If he has something to do, he should do it now. We need it now. Now we can't even move the car out of the port. As a driver, we need to be able to move the car. It takes a lot of effort to get from the port. SZo, if you have something to do, do it today! ” One more thing was added.
“Every time I hear his words, I laugh. When you come, you tell us you're going to abolish these taxes that were introduced by your government. You weren't there when they introduced them. Did you?”
“Does he think we're kids and he's trying to put dirt in our eyes? We've grown past those mistakes. He's saying that for the sake of voting.” I know it's there, but he doesn't do anything about it.
“Because he was part of this introduction. I don't know why he's saying that. I mean he knows introducing taxes is bad in the first place,” another lamented. .
