Neighbors call John Carmack “The Cat Whisperer.”
Customer Nadi Ovanesov said that before Kurmak intervened, her cat, Guava, had become feral and had a very unruly coat.
“No one else will see her,” Ovanesov said. “Her veterinarian wouldn't examine her unless she was given her sedative. We couldn't get her sedated. When I called her John, he said, 'Take her. “Come,” he said. And I thought, “Oh my god.” ”
Grooming and rescuing pets is his mission. When his father passed away a year ago, John used his inheritance to buy a mobile grooming business called Pampered Paws.
“I know he wanted it,” Kurmak said.
But Kurmak's life changed forever when a gas line exploded while refueling in early March.
The fire traveled down his arm and spread to the trailer, destroying it within 10 minutes.
“I think the reason I'm still alive is because of all the animals I help,” Kurmak said. . ” ”
According to the San Diego Humane Society, there are as many as 500,000 feral cats roaming the county. their lives are in danger.
“They get attacked by coyotes,” Ovanesoff said. “They get hit by cars. They can't find enough food. They desperately need help. And John is one of those who helps.”
John groomed every animal, pet or stray, from his pampered paws. The trailer was recently purchased and he was still looking for insurance when it burned down.
While paramedics tended to his wounds, Kurmak's mind was elsewhere.
“They told me to go to the hospital,” Kurmak said. There are too many cats who need me. ” ”
Krumak wants to buy a new trailer so she can get back to doing what she does best: caring for the city's cats who need her.
“You can't sleep when you don't have help and can't help you, right?” Kurmak asked. “It's really hard to get a good night's rest when you don't have any help.”
San Diego Fire Rescue said faulty wiring likely caused the fire. Mr Krumak's friends have started an online fundraising campaign to recoup their losses.
