“The clock is ticking/When I log in to social media”
West Midlands four-piece Citylights explore our strange and toxic online obsessions with their latest single '#trending'.
The band originally formed in 2009 and released a number of strong releases last year, including “Game Over,” “Envy,” and “Hats Off.” Now they tell the story of a digital dystopia with witty (and thought-provoking) lyricism set against a punchy indie-rock melody.
At over four minutes, “#trending” is neither short nor particularly enjoyable. Instead, you'll experience the complexities of social media culture, touching on themes like online presence, digital validation, and the constant quest for view counts.
The band said: “This track isn't just about getting likes and views. This is a commentary on the search for authentic connection in a world dominated by screens. ”
It starts with a biting guitar strum, then picks up the pace with a thudding bass and a thunderous drumbeat. Rapid-fire verses are delivered over catchy, bouncy riffs that discuss everyday online habits. The chorus changes the atmosphere by introducing backing harmonies that complement the lead.
“Digital Social LITE / Live your life for the people you love”
This track has the true essence of The Specials and early Arctic Monkeys, a sonic blend that includes elements of rap and ska/punk as well as indie. Fitting for a song that provides such an introspective and powerful social commentary on modern society.
The pace picks up around 2 minutes and 50 seconds, and a repeated refrain begins. “I’m living my life while you livestream…” – A reminder to all of us to try to be more present before we miss the important parts.
