RAPIDS CITY, South Dakota – It's not every day that a state agency visits a child. This is especially true for children who have not yet entered kindergarten. But Thursday was no ordinary day. Preschooler Pete Stephenson beat out more than 650 other bidders for the right to name a local snowplow. Pete lives in the Black Hills where he spends his days at Energy Daycare. His winning name is “Scoop There It Is.” This is his fourth year that the South Dakota Department of Transportation has held a snowplow naming contest, with each winner chosen by blind voting.
Believe it or not, DOT says this isn't the first time a preschooler has won. “Sometimes young children are the most creative,” said Mike Carlson, SD DOT Rapid City Area Engineer. “This is a great name and snowplow drivers know they can put this name on their snowplow and use it for years to come.” I'm very pleased.”
Now, Pete sees the words “Scoop There It Is” written on the plow. The DOT is holding a naming contest to raise awareness of snow plows on the roads. Check out the list below to see the names of other award-winning plows.
