RENO, Nev. (COLO) – Fourth annual statewide youth mental health discussion co-chaired by Hope Means Nevada and teens from local high schools challenges student leaders to brainstorm preventive measures to help end youth suicide. Gave me a chance.
“We're trying to reach teens, we're trying to equip kids who want to destigmatize mental health, and we're trying to provide resources for others.” says Sidney Menante, Nevada, co-chair of the Teens Committee for Hope.
Menante said her choice to help other teens struggling with mental health issues stemmed from personal experience.
“I decided to join his industry shortly after a childhood friend of mine lost his life during my freshman year of college, and I became a loud voice on mental health within my school. There are many reasons why children take their own lives and why children suffer from anxiety and depression.”
Co-chair Addison Clark says one of the biggest struggles for teens is finding balance.
“It's about balancing school and social life and really using the tools that are best designed for us to see what works for us,” Clark says.
Another was isolation.
“Just understand that you're not alone and that there are organizations dedicated to helping you through what you're struggling with,” Clark says.
Hope Means Nevada and The Children's Cabinet will host an event to raise awareness of mental health resources for teens Friday at the Discovery Museum's Mind Matters exhibit. It will be held from 6:30pm to 9:30pm
