To ensure the City of Pittsburgh makes responsible fiscal decisions, Mayor Gainey announced the creation of a Fiscal Task Force.
Vice Mayor Jake Pawlak said, “We want to bring together financial leaders to look at common numbers, discuss them, understand them, and make sure there is agreement on the data itself.” .
Shortly after Mayor Gainey announced the task force, Channel 11 spoke with Vice Mayor Jake Pawlak.
Pawlak said he and other financial leaders have reviewed first-quarter revenue data and expect city spending to be within budget by the end of the year.
His assessment comes after City Commissioner Rachel Heisler sent a letter to Mayor Gainey a month ago encouraging the city to reopen its 2024 budget to revise revenue projections.
“We want to work with all departments of government to figure out how to appropriately respond to what the data is showing, which is also positive and as significant as the Administrator has stated in some public comments.” “It's not a big challenge,” he added.
Heisler has lost millions of dollars in property taxes due to vacant downtown buildings and a court injunction that prevents the city from collecting taxes on athletes and performers who play at city venues who don't live in the city. I predicted that it would happen. Additionally, she had financial concerns about the American Relief Fund being depleted.
Today, she told the new task force, in part: “With revenue and spending uncertain, if we don't act now we will face difficult times over the next few years.”
“All I can say from the revenue we have collected so far this year is that we are on pace for the year and that we are collecting more revenue in some of our most important categories than on the same day of the year. ’ before,” Pawlak added.
