WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — PETS is a low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Wichita Falls known for quality pet care and cost savings. But another important part of its mission includes “leaving no pet behind,” giving every dog and cat a loving place to call their furry home.
PETS Underdog Express is a foster-based transportation program run by the clinic to take pets at high risk of euthanasia off the fear list and place them in suitable homes. On Thursday, April 11th, PE.TS shipped its 5,000th puppy to Syracuse, New York.
Since 2017, the nonprofit adoption-based transportation program has rescued dogs from overcrowded shelters in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.
Staff and volunteers examine the animals for health and evaluate their personalities before shipping them to partners in the northern United States. Animals spend an average of nine days at the shelter before being adopted into wonderful homes.
According to people involved with the organization, they send an average of 35 dogs about once a month.
“Every time Jan said Hunt Parker would be the 5,000th dog, I said, 'Of course he is.' He is perfectly qualified,” said Jalen Parker, the pet's foster parent. “That speaks to how special he is. And he's going to be a tough guy to let go of. So he deserves to be celebrated. This is a special milestone for all of us and he He's a special dog.”
The average test cost to prepare a healthy dog for transport is $225. The clinic said it is always in need of donations and new foster homes.
