RED BLUFF — The Paskenta Tribe of Nomlaki Indians sponsored a free adoption event Friday at the Tehama County Animal Shelter to help animals find their forever homes.
All adoption costs and fees associated with adopting the pet were covered by the tribe. Adoption typically costs about $175. They also provided care packages for adopted pets and free photography for new family portraits.
“I think we're already giving back a lot by going back there. We see a need for a care center and making sure everyone is aware of all the resources they offer.” , we offer it to facilitate adoption,” said Foundation Coordinator Vanessa Alvarez. .
Alvarez said the event was scheduled to start around noon, but people were lining up by 11 a.m.
This is the first year the Tribe has held this event. Alvarez said he has already received a lot of recognition.
There were 130 to 140 dogs and several cats up for adoption. The care center was scheduled to stay open until 6 p.m. to give people time to pick up their pets after work.
Animal shelter manager Christine McClintock said it would be great if 30 to 40 dogs could be adopted.
“Their community foundation really wanted to get more involved and reached out to us and asked if we would be interested in this,” McClintock continued. “And they spearheaded this event. There were prizes up for grabs for people who shared the event online or donated to us, and they donated on Valentine's Day night at the casino. Ta.”
Kayla Found was announced as the lottery winner on Tuesday.Alvarez believes 30 pets had been adopted as of 3:30 p.m.
On average, the care center takes in about 2,000 animals a year. McClintock said 1,500 are dogs. Most dogs stay at the shelter for an average of 14 days, but some are adopted sooner or later, while others wait up to three months before being adopted. In 2023, Glenn County was added to the list of care shelter destinations. As a result of this, the average number of dogs accepted at the care center increased from about 108 per month to 190 last year.
Pets can be adopted at any time at the animal shelter.
