The shooting occurred Saturday night outside the Platts Pez store near the intersection of 8th Avenue and Alma School Road and involved an employee of the store.
MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa pet store employee has been arrested after a shooting outside the store Saturday night, according to Mesa police.
Police say they received a 911 call about a shooting outside Platts Petz, located in a strip mall on the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and Alma School Road, around 6 p.m. Saturday, police said.
The caller told dispatchers that a pet store employee, identified as 21-year-old Jacob Urias, was involved.
Officers quickly arrived at the scene, located the 32-year-old male victim, and began life-saving measures. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Officers found Urias inside the pet store and took him into custody.
Police said an investigation revealed that Urias and two female employees were working outside the store when they saw the unidentified man. They told him to leave because he was trespassing, but he wouldn't. The female employees then returned to the store and called police to have officers remove the men from the premises.
It was during the call that the shooting occurred.
Urias admitted to shooting the man, and police found a handgun at the scene. Urias was charged with second-degree murder.
The investigation is still ongoing.
This is a developing story and more details will be added as they become available.
