PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Our furry friends come in all shapes and sizes, but if you feed them too much, they can become too fat. One breed of dog that is particularly genetically prone to obesity is the Labrador Retriever.
Pennsylvania SPCA Animal Advocate Carol Erickson explains that one in four lab animals lacks part of a gene that prevents animals from feeling full after eating. This means that these dogs may be hungry all the time.
In fact, the Laboratory is the only breed of dog with this genetic mutation.

Labrador Retrievers have a strong appetite for food and work for their food, making them excellent service and assistance dogs.
Erickson says it's difficult not to give in to a hungry Labrador's food begs, but it's important to maintain a healthy feeding schedule.
