MOORLAND — Seven pets died in a wind-driven fire that destroyed a Moorland home Tuesday evening.
Four dogs and three cats died in the fire at 324 Linden St., Moorland Fire Chief Ken Thompson said.
There were no injuries.
The fire blew ash and embers onto the property directly across the street, reaching the garage. The man who lives there pulled out his garden hose to protect his property.
The fire was reported around 4:45 p.m.
Thompson said when firefighters arrived, flames were coming from three sides of the two-story wooden home.
“The wind was blowing through the house.” He said. “We basically pushed it up and pushed it in.”
Firefighters relied on water from hydrants and tanker trucks.
Thompson said some firefighters climbed a ladder and entered the house through a second-floor east window and eventually extinguished the fire.
Thompson said one of the homeowners returned home when the fire was discovered and drove his sport utility vehicle too close to the building, causing the driver's side to be burned.
He said both floors of the home suffered extensive fire damage.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The home is owned by Marsh Properties LLC of Fort Dodge, according to online records from the Webster County Assessor's Office. According to those records, it was built in 1880.
Firefighters from Moorland, Callender, Burnham and Oso responded. Webster County Sheriff's Deputies, Webster County Emergency Management Agency and Gauley Police Department also responded.
Emergency crews were on scene until about 7 p.m.
