A student from Pakistan has been sentenced to death by a court in Punjab. According to reports, the court said a 22-year-old boy was sentenced for sharing blasphemous photos and videos on WhatsApp. In the same case, a 17-year-old boy was sentenced to life in prison.
The complaint against the students was filed by Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)'s cybercrime wing in 2022, the BBC reported. The case was filed in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province. The case was then referred to the district court in Gujranwala.
Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan. Even before the trial began, there were incidents where people reportedly lynched others accused of this crime.
What does the court ruling say?
According to the BBC, the judges said the 22-year-old student had created videos and photos containing derogatory language against the Prophet Muhammad and his wives. Plaintiff claimed to have received the materials. His junior was convicted of sharing the material.
The father of the student sentenced to death told the BBC that he plans to appeal the sentence to the Lahore High Court. The defense argued that the students had been “involved in a false incident.''
