Some businesses in Pacifica say they're seeing a drop in foot traffic due to recent storms and the temporary closure of the city's piers.
“It went well at first. It was exciting,” said Ginger Davis of Chit Chat Café. “The big waves brought tourists and locals here.”
Davis then noticed a change at a cafe near Pacifica Pier.
“After a while, the waves subsided and the pier closure lasted a little longer,” Davis said. “It's really starting to hit us. … Our business is down about 50 percent here. There's just no foot traffic here. The rain doesn't help either.”
Sunday was sunny, but more rain is forecast for the next few days. The pier was closed last month due to storm damage. This spot, which used to attract tourists and anglers, has been in a slump recently.
“From what I've heard from previous owners and local business owners in the area, January is usually a slow month, but this year seems to be especially slow,” Davis said.
They have regular customers who support them come rain or shine, but this was not what they expected.
“We've seen at least a 30% decline on this block,” said Margaret Coles Wesley of Champa's Pies.
On Palmetto Avenue, several other businesses said they are also seeing changes.
“We really need people to come from all over the Bay Area to enjoy Pacifica,” Coles-Wesley said. “We really need that traffic.”
While local residents and patrons are doing their part, some businesses are working together on promotions to attract more tourists.
“This is not a big neighborhood, so there's always someone up to something among the store owners, so there's a lot of events scheduled,” Coles-Wesley said.
The city said the pier will be closed until February 14 and may be partially reopened after that. However, the engineering team is still investigating the damage. According to the city, construction will not be complete until March.
