LOS ANGELES (AP) – The red carpet is back at the 96th Academy Awards this year, following last year's champagne color change. Stars paraded around in dazzling costumes, waving to countless photographers and fans. The annual ritual of lights, cameras and fashion got off to an eventful start.
Osage singers and dancers made their grand entrance down the steps of the Dolby Theater in colorful traditional costumes. Onlookers could be heard saying, “Wow!” in amazement. Their departure up the stairs, bells wrapped around their knees, was truly musical. Live on the show, they perform their nominated song from “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Associated Press photographer John Locher roamed the carpet Sunday afternoon, capturing many candid and unexpected moments.
Ramy Youssef pretended to be a red carpet photographer and playfully grabbed a camera. Meanwhile, last year's Academy Award winners relaxed and posed for selfies with fans.
Jamie Lee Curtis kissed a fan's hand, but when asked by The Associated Press if they knew each other, she replied, “No, I'm just a fan.” I always loved her. ”
Emily Blunt came over to hug Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas on the red carpet. John Krasinski noted that Nolan looked dapper. They took pictures and laughed together. “Oppenheimer” is widely expected to nearly sweep the awards.
In unison, the crowd in the bleachers shouted, “Hello, Barbie!” When Margot Robbie appeared on the carpet. They were the last to take their seats, along with Ryan Gosling and Martin Scorsese.
“The trick is not to step on someone else's train,” director Steven Spielberg said as he descended the last carpet of stairs to the Dolby Theater, where the show was about to begin.
