OAK ISLAND — A small beach town in Brunswick County has a new face pulling double duty for the island.
The City of Oak Island has hired Kathryn Adams, current Director of Finance, to also serve as Assistant Town Manager. Current Town Manager David Kelley, who plans to step down to retire this summer, informed the City Council during Tuesday's adjournment..
The council unanimously supported the move. This position was approved as part of this year's budget. Mr. Adams was hired in August 2023, where he served as Finance Director for six months. In his new role, he will oversee standard day-to-day operations and the development and implementation of goals, policies and procedures.
Mr. Adams will serve as Assistant Town Manager and will fill in for the Town Manager in the event of an emergency or if the Manager is unable to perform his duties. This will be critical in the transition to a new Town Manager as the City Council begins the selection process.
“Kathryn’s skills, experience and familiarity with the town will be a key asset in ensuring the quick integration of the selected candidate,” a town press release states.
Mr. Adams will also continue to oversee the finance department. However, this position change will result in the creation of a new Accounting Manager position, which will be announced at a later date.
