WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Novant Health is rolling out a new mobile mammography unit to provide easier access to breast cancer screenings at a variety of locations and events.
“The new division supports Novant Health's continued goal of reducing disparities in breast cancer screening. Mammography is already available at physical locations in the region, but providing mobile access will help those without transportation “Adds a more convenient option for people living in rural areas and rural areas,” Novant Health's announcement said.
Regular breast cancer screenings are recommended starting at age 40, and may be earlier for those at high risk.
“The mobile unit is equipped with the latest 3D technology. In a 3D mammogram, an X-ray tube takes multiple low-dose images that are then regenerated by a computer. “It provides millimeter-thin snapshots of breast tissue, which together provide radiologists with a detailed three-dimensional view,” the announcement continues.
This unit was paid for with support from the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation.
“This mobile unit is a physical representation of our commitment to increasing access to breast cancer screening and reducing disparities in outcomes,” said Ernie Bovio, president of Novant Health Coastal Region and Novant Health NHRMC. says. “We want to do everything we can to make breast cancer screening easily accessible to everyone who needs it. Early detection can greatly improve treatment options and save lives. It’s been proven.”
