ARLINGTON, Texas (News Release) – The 19th-ranked Texas Tech baseball program lost to No. 7 Oregon State, 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Globe Life Field.
In the loss, Texas Tech (3-2) was negated by just 2-for-13 hits with runners in scoring position and 4-for-23 hits with runners on base.
Four different Red Raiders finished the game with multiple hits, including Damian Bravo, who went 3-for-5 with a double. Bravo finished the opening week of the season with an amazing batting average of .474, five doubles, and five RBIs.
Red Raiders freshman Landon Stripling also finished with multiple hits, with the Georgia native making his first career start as a designated hitter. Stripling had 2 hits in 4 at bats, including a walk.
The technical department relied on sophomore Jacob Rodgers, but after retiring the first five batters of the game, he faced a crisis by allowing a double and an infield single with two outs and second base. The double scored on a pickoff attempt that bounced off Kash.
In the second home half, Tech got a leadoff double from Cade McGee and a one-out single from Bravo, but a strikeout and a pop-up put the Beavers (5-0) out of bounds unscathed.
Rodgers went down in the bottom of the third inning and immediately ran into trouble, allowing a double between walks. A combination of two extra-base hits and a free pass gave OSU a 2-0 lead and put runners on second and third base.
After loading the bases, OSU added three more runs and took a 5-0 lead heading into the home half of the third inning.
Tech went 4-5-6 with back-to-back walks, had a pair on and no one out, and had a chance in the frame, but as they had all day, OSU answered with two strikeouts and two strikeouts. I was able to find it. Flyout to eliminate threats.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, a double and two walks left the bases loaded with no outs, and Tech was finally able to break through. Tech turned to Austin Green off the bench and immediately broke through the left side to score two points.
After a fielding error loaded the bases again, Tech used a fielder's choice RBI and a sac fly to pull within 6-4.
Oregon State scored four runs with a three-run double that hit the left field choke within inches, and the game remained tied at 6-4 until the sixth inning. These four points gave OSU a 10-4 lead.
The Red Raiders had a chance to come close in the bottom of the 8th inning with one out and the bases loaded, but a clever double play in the deep hole ended Tech's rally.
With today's loss against Oregon State, the Red Raiders finished the season opener with an overall record of 3-2.
