As of January 1, active-duty military members are eligible for reimbursement for costs associated with relocating one household pet due to a permanent change in station relocation.
According to the Joint Travel Regulatory Office, the cost of relocating a single dog or cat includes travel within the United States or abroad, as well as other travel requirements.
Since taking office, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III has prioritized efforts to strengthen support for Defense Department employees and families under his “Taking Care of Servicemembers and Families” campaign.
These efforts include important efforts to improve the lives of military members and their families through, among other things, access to quality, affordable child care and reducing the burden of relocation for military families. .
“The Department of Defense recognizes that pets can be a source of stability and security for military members and families who frequently move. Defraying the cost of PCS travel with pets is an important consideration for the role these emotional constants play. and will improve the quality of life for our troops,” said Jennifer McPherson Todd, director of the Defense Travel Management Agency.

Additionally, dependents of military personnel, Department of Defense civilians, and Department of Defense employees who are ordered to evacuate from a foreign post will be eligible for transportation and quarantine costs for up to two pets, dogs or cats.
