NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara, who is currently on board the International Space Station, joined X to share stunning images of the Hindu Kush Mountains. Mountain ranges can appear to glow thanks to a phenomenon called “alpenglow.” According to the American Weather Association, alpenglow is “the color of the setting sun that sometimes appears on (snow-covered) mountain peaks shortly after sunset, and a similar phenomenon that occurs before sunrise.”
Sharing the image, Loral O'Hara wrote: “Alpenglow: As magical from space as it is on Earth. Located near the Hindu Kush Mountains in Central and South Asia.” Aerial photos taken from the ISS show sunlight shining on the tops of snow-capped mountains.
