RED OAK, Iowa – Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business Committee, today announced the Small Business of the Week Award, Laura’s Fine Hot Sauce of Polk County. Throughout this Congress, Ranking Member Ernst plans to recognize small businesses in all of his 99 counties in Iowa.
“What better way to celebrate National Hot Sauce Day than by recognizing the small businesses that spice up Polk County and the world with delicious hot sauces.” said ranking member Ernst. “I would like to congratulate mother and son duo Tawfiq and Laura Shah on achieving the American Dream, serving their communities, and building a business that honors their family traditions.”
From humble beginnings as a stand at a local farmers' market, Lola's Fine Hot Sauce has grown into a successful business that partners with more than 14,000 retailers worldwide. The secret to founder Tawfiq Shah's success was a family hot sauce recipe passed down to him by his mother, Carmelita “Laura” Shah, the company's namesake. Today, we've branched out from our original recipe and offer a variety of hot sauces, salsas, and merchandise, including Southern Jalapeño Bloody Mary Mix, Honey Jalapeño Beef Jerky, and Lola's Original Seasoning. Mr. Tawfik currently serves on the boards of both the Iowa Center for Economic Success and the Des Moines Area Community College Foundation. Lola's Fine Hot Sauce is a proud member of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and is celebrating its 7th anniversary in 2024.
Stay tuned as Ranking Member Ernst recognizes more Iowa small businesses across the state with this week's Small Business of the Year Award.
