The Central Texas Food Bank and the Hays County Pet Resource Center held their first drive-up food distribution for people and pets on Saturday, March 23, at McCormick Middle School in Buda.
The event was open to anyone in Hays County and was attended by over 250 families. Of the 250 families, an estimated 98% needed pet food.
Wet and dry food for dogs and cats was provided to families, as well as resource guide flyers with information about medical assistance, behavioral support, and other low-cost pet services. The Hays County Pet Resource Center estimates they have distributed food to more than 195 dogs and 135 cats. A survey conducted at the event found that 59% of respondents reported not being able to afford or have access to pet food in the past two years.
“The response to this event shows the need for families to have access to pet food,” said Lee Ann Shenefiel of Austin Pets Alive!.
