The Kent County Animal Shelter said the location was chosen specifically to alleviate the transportation challenges residents of northern Kent County face when removing their pets from the shelter.
Angela Hollinshead, director of the Kent County Animal Shelter, said many owners are unable to pick up their pets due to transportation to the shelter or time off from work. Her new 24-hour microchip identification system allows families to reunite with their pets before they are taken to a shelter.
The initiative is part of the Kent County Animal Shelter's goal to improve the rate at which owners adopt lost dogs. The shelter says that even though the number of stray dogs entering its shelters increased by nearly 200% in 2019, the number of owners coming to pick up their pets has decreased significantly. As a result, evacuation centers will be over capacity.
The shelter also recently donated scanners to local Kent County law enforcement agencies.

The new microchip scanning station is housed in a secure weatherproof case. Instructions written in Spanish and English are posted on a nearby wall.
